Lucid narration and portrayal of tragedies of life

Vidushi Nautiyal of the BookNerds Team, in her book review on Amazon, has this to say in her concluding remarks,

” Ghosalโ€™s lucid narration and portrayal of tragedies of life through varied characters ranging from the humble, the corrupt, and theextraordinary are remarkable and didactic.

The use of slokas adds philosophical insights, and the flashbacks of events make the plot enthralling and engaging.”

I am delighted to see that she has given the book a 5 Star rating.

What does a domain expert in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering have to say

Chief Engineer Arunabh Pal ,domain expert in Naval architecture and Marine Engineering, has the following to say after his engagement with the Chronicler.

“I have never attempted a book review, but this one is special : The Chronicler of the Hooghly.

โ€œNo wordsโ€, is the first thought that crosses my mind when I try to praise the book. Spellbound comes close to describing the feelingโ€ฆbut then it is not fair that such a stupendous piece of work from a good friend goes unsung.

I read the book at a leisurely pace, soaking in each crucible experience as the author calls it.

โ€œAshtamiโ€ leaves you gasping. Gasping for more as you suddenly appreciate the myriad emotions of a mother around a not-so-perfect child. One would like to think it happens only to others, but reality is often so different.

It is not difficult to relate to the double tragedies portrayed in โ€œPandemicโ€ given the numerous human stories of struggle, failure, triumph and deceit unfolding around Covid today. You wonder about the timing of penning this story just as you marvel at the brilliance in creating the character Elokeshi.

โ€œFault Linesโ€ unleashed a volley of unpleasant memories in me, of being a victim of an industrial explosion many moons back. I consider myself fortunate to have looked death in the eye and return. Anjanโ€™s tryst with his conscience is scarily real. Savio succeeds in unsettling you. Stellar work there!

โ€œThe Chronicler Of The Hooghlyโ€ does just that: chart a mystical course amidst several (lesser known) historical facts and events and keeps you glued to the narrative even as you anticipate the next turn. It brings up the rear end rather well, resonating with the common theme of weaving history intricately into fiction to create four fascinating tales.

Canโ€™t wait for your next one, Author Shakti Ghosal!”

Dr. Viraj P. Thacker muses….

Dr.Viraj P. Thacker, currently based in the US, is the famed Author of โ€˜The Myth of Prosperity: Globalization and the Southโ€™. He is also the Academic Facilitator, Development Consultant and the International Executive Director of Manushi for Sustainable Development.

After reading the ‘Chronicler of the Hooghly and other stories, he sent me his thoughts, which I have copied below. Arguably, this is one of the most wonderful acknowledgments that the Chronicler has garnered.

QUOTE

My Humble reflections on the ‘Chronicler of the Hooghly’:

To use a living metaphor, the legendary structure that spans the Hooghly in Calcutta ingeniously personifies the very title of a deeply reflective & flowing read…touching stories of life & circumstance that bridge the history of British Calcutta & Delhi…a reflective re-capture of the social-historical-cultural fabric of India.

To be quite honest, the gently flowing chapters brilliantly managed to evoke a deep sense of my own family history of some 6 generations, in the erstwhile Second City of the Empire…later, the City of Joy!

What truly grips the reader In this wonderful complexity of ‘a touch of the old Raj’ and the deep humanity of the pages that captivate, is the ‘pandemic’ that translates well to our current global dilemma. In fact, the author brilliantly credits the composition of the book to time well spent in lockdown!

The Chronicler of the Hooghly truly resonated with this reader on many counts & in a most heartwarming fashion, left me with a sense of hope-faith in the human experience.

A Video Review

I am delighted to showcase this Video book review of ‘The Chronicler of the Hooghly and other stories’.In our lives, we at times get confronted with intense and traumatic events which force us to question who we are, what really matters to us and what we believe in.

In some ways these events alter our sense of reality. Each of the four stories in this book draws inspiration from such crucible events that I have had to face. The protagonists in that sense carry a bit of my own โ€˜experience and thoughtโ€™ genes. As I see them now within the larger fabric of the stories, I do notice shades of myself and others who have been part of my life. Writing the stories has been a personal journey in that sense. At times the stories seemed to write themselves.

An Acknowledgement that I treasure

I feel elated to share this kind and generous acknowledgment given by Mr. Vaikunth, Ex Managing Director, Saud Bahwan Group, Oman & UAE, with whom I have had the privilege of working for more than two decades.

“It has been an honour to have known and worked with you, Sir. I have learned so much from you!”

Mr. Vaikunth writes as follows:

I know Shakti Ghosal for many years as we worked together for the same company in Muscat. SG is known for his great knowledge on the business he handled and had the character to speak out his mind. I never knew that he had this other side of a soft story teller. I just finished reading the “Ashtami” the first story in his book “The Chronicle of the Hooghly”. As he has nicely combined the pre and post independence era in this story it looked like a real life story of some one he knew. His style of writing is unique, clean and simple. That’s what I liked about. Congratulations to SG. I will soon read the rest of the book.
