Why not you?

IIT Kanpur graduate Aroop Roy, Ex General Manager @ Saud Bahwan Group, Oman & UAE, has this to say about the Chronicler.” Very well researched stories. Takes you back in time and you can simulate in your mind what actually happened and evolved. The previous Pandemic a century ago, a fire incident decade ago, British Raj story…..all are well described”

A Corporate Honcho and a New Zealander.

So what would you say is common between a New Zealander and a Corporate honcho?

It is rediscovering a good read!

Tilak Ghoshal is an erudite reader. An engineer by training, he was the Business Head with Unilevers and post-retirement, continues to be an advisor to many MNCs and Indian conglomerates.

Having engaged with the Chronicler and after reading the book, he has the following words to offer:

“History – replete with many lesser-known facts and events – is beautifully woven around delightfully moving stories. As I read through, I had to pause here and there, struck by the true import of the adage ‘truth is often stranger than fiction….. Any time is a good time for such a wonderful read – but more so in the joyless ‘dark age’ mankind now finds itself in….. Wish you many more successes in your future literary endeavours, Shakti!”

I feel truly acknowledged by these words.

While across the seas and at the other end of the world, Dipankar Goswami in Auckland New Zealand, looks forward to a tete a tete with the Chronicler. I am left wondering how that would be.

An Author writes

Dr. Shweta Sachdeva, Author of The Converging Point, writes thus:

The Chronicler of the Hooghly is a fictional novel with a magically woven plot of four stories through the mind of author oscillating between the past and the present events.

The book creates a fascinating tapestry of faith, relationships, and greed. This is Shakti Ghosal’s first novel, but he has complete control of his story and his style.

Must read!’

Sanskrit shlokas and the art of creating an eclectic tapestry

I am happy to feature this author interview done recently by Book Nerds. What I had found particularly interesting about this interview was the incisiveness of the questions asked. Each of the questions made me think about a new facet of the book.

Book Nerds has written the following : “Debut author Shakti Ghosal speaks about his debut book The Chronicler of the Hooghly ,writing the book during pandemic times ,challenges of the short story format, the rich heritage of Kolkata and so much more……..”

Vishakha Raghav @ Vishing_sky

Reviewer Vishakha Raghav in her Vishing_Sky forum has this to say about the Chronicler of the Hooghly.

The Chronicler of the Hooghly is a historical fiction that is themed out in Kolkata, India. The book is 170+ pages of wonderland.

How did I feel while reading the book?

With every page turn, an emotion inside me unwrapped. Shakti has put his heart out while writing this book. The writing was captivating, “The characters were believable and I cared about them, the plots had a couple of twists and turns due to which I couldn’t put the book down.”

The book is divided into 4 short stories, they are different yet feel so connected deep down. The glimpse of these stories is taken from Shakti’s own experiences in the past with a great blend of fiction in it. I loved the way Shakti has concluded the stories, they left me with goosebumps.

Each story is thought-provoking, I could relate the most to the first two stories which are 1) Ashtami and 2) Pandemic. Ashtami is about a clerk in 1912 who has to move to a new city Delhi with his wife. How was their life in Delhi? In the time of the British Raj, what challenges the couple had to face? The pandemic of 1919 was very similar to the one in 2020 because both left humans with emotions that were so similar! I still can’t decide if Pandemics are impacting us externally or internally.

🚩However some of these are a little complex in composition. One needs to think this book through. Sometimes it forces you to analyze your thoughts and guess what might happen next.

How I changed after reading this book?

🚩People are the most important in our lives. The grief of losing someone can not be understood. I repeat it can not be understood, no matter what. This is what I learned from this book.

Meenu Annadurai has this to say

Meenu Annadurai, after reading the book, has this to say :

“I fell in love with Kolkata all over again. I’m kind of very fascinated about the modern India and it’s history for a very long time. The way the author had weaved a tremendous stories around these historic events were really amazing. Since I have read my History books quite too many times I was able to pinpoint certain events and was able to make the connection. It was really interesting for me.

I loved the journey this book was able to take me on. The writing style of the author had made it a lot more easier to swift through the pages of the book.

I would recommend this book to people who are very much into history, you will enjoy it. If you are someone who wants to start the habit of reading and want short reads, then you can definitely go ahead with this book.”
